The pitch

Why Slovenia sells

Slovenia is a safe, orderly EU/Schengen country the size of Wales, with one of Europe's greenest capitals in Ljubljana — central, and within an hour of both the Alps and the coast.

For an active outdoors teen it's a standout: world-class rowing at Lake Bled and serious mountain biking in the Julian Alps and at Pohorje. Ljubljana is the base for schooling, the airport and the DNV.

The honest counterweight: it's cooler continental/alpine rather than warm-Med, the coast is a token 47km, the English-medium school market is small, and the digital-nomad permit is a one-year, non-renewable trial visa.

The route in

How you actually get residency

Slovenia's digital-nomad permit (in force Nov 2025) is income-evidenced but explicitly one year and non-renewable — a trial year, not a settlement plan; the self-employment route is the durable alternative. Planning-grade; confirm with a Slovenian adviser.

Digital Nomad Permit

New (Nov 2025) for remote workers/self-employed serving foreign clients. A savings balance is NOT accepted — recurring income is, which fits you.

  • Income ~€3,080/mo (2× average net salary, indexed) main applicant — comfortably cleared
  • Valid up to 1 year and CANNOT be extended; re-apply only 6 months after expiry
  • Apply at the London consulate before arrival, or an administrative unit in-country
The durable routeSettlement

Self-employment / company

The route to pick if the family wants to settle rather than trial a year.

  • Register a Slovenian s.p. or d.o.o. → renewable residence
  • Counts toward PR (5 years) and eventual citizenship — unlike the DNV
  • Slower and more bureaucratic, but durable
Eli & DarciDependants

Who can come

Slovenia advertises a more favourable family-reunification regime — family may join immediately.

  • Eli (14) joins straightforwardly
  • Darci (18) is an adult — reunification needs proof of dependency, not automatic (verify)
  • Dependants aren't tied to the permit's short duration

Climate, coast & tax

Three things temper the appeal.

  • Cooler continental/alpine climate — cold, foggy Ljubljana winters; the coast is only ~47km and not a beach base
  • Living here full-time makes you tax-resident on worldwide income (16–50%; 25% flat on passive income)
  • The DNV is a one-year, non-renewable trial — plan the switch or exit before you arrive
By the numbers

What a year costs

~£47,100/ year
≈ £3,925 per month · 2 adults + Eli · Ljubljana
Living (2 + Eli)£32,850
Eli · IGCSE school£13,000
Flights (6 return/yr)£1,200
Living 70%School 28%Flights 2%

Livable but not lavish once school fees are in. The coast is a day-trip, not a base. Figures at ≈ €1.16 to £1 (planning rate — verify).

Monthly living, itemised — 2 adults + Eli (excludes school & flights)
Item€ / month£ / month
Rent 3-bed, nice suburb near central Ljubljana€1,600£1,380
Groceries & household€600£517
Utilities & internet€315£272
Private health insurance family; also a visa requirement€150£129
Transport passes + car incidentals€110£95
Eating out, leisure & sport€400£345
Living subtotal≈ €3,175≈ £2,740 / mo

Then an IGCSE place (~€15,000/yr) and ~6 return UK flights (easyJet direct, ~2h15) take the all-in to ~£3,925/mo. School fees dominate discretionary room.

The practicalities

How it actually works

Tax on foreign income

Worldwide once resident

Living here full-time makes you tax-resident on worldwide income (16/26/33/39/50%; passive income flat 25%). DNV status doesn't exempt you. UK treaty prevents double tax; structure with a Slovenian adviser — the biggest financial variable.

Healthcare

Good; private for the visa

Strong universal system once contributing; DNV holders rely on private/international cover (a visa requirement), ~€120–180/mo family.

Climate & coast

Cool; token coast

Four seasons — warm summers (~28–30°C) but cold, foggy winters in the Ljubljana basin; Alps colder. The sub-Mediterranean coast is only ~47km and largely port/pebble. Not a beach relocation.

Schooling · IGCSE

One British school

British International School of Ljubljana (IGCSE/A-level) is the fit; benchmark international fees ~€13,000–16,000/yr. IB alternatives exist (LIS, Danila Kumar). The coast has no British/IGCSE school.

Pets

No quarantine (EU)

Microchip, rabies jab (≥21 days prior) and a GB Animal Health Certificate within 10 days; no tapeworm treatment for Slovenia. Re-register with a Slovenian vet on arrival.

Safety & notes

Among the safest

Consistently one of the safest EU countries — low crime, clean, orderly, great for teens. Slovene helps with daily admin outside the expat/school bubble.

For Eli

His two loves — and both are world-class

Mountain biking

Excellent. Kranjska Gora Bike Park and the Julian Alps (Kranj, Bohinj, Soča) for trail/enduro, and Pohorje (Maribor) — a UCI Downhill World Cup venue ~1h45 away. A top-tier MTB country.

Rowing

The standout. Lake Bled is a world-famous rowing venue (World Championships host, incl. 2011) with an active, high-quality club scene, ~50 minutes from Ljubljana. Arguably Slovenia's single strongest draw for Eli — genuine elite-pathway rowing on a spectacular alpine lake.

Honest view

The trade-offs

In favour

  • World-class rowing (Bled) and MTB (Pohorje/Julian Alps)
  • Among the safest, greenest EU countries
  • EU/Schengen; central, an hour from Alps and coast
  • Income-evidenced permit (no savings-balance test)
  • Direct 2h15 flights to London

Against

  • Cool climate, cold foggy Ljubljana winters — not warm-Med
  • The coast is a token ~47km — not a beach base
  • One British/IGCSE school; Ljubljana-only
  • DNV is a one-year, non-renewable trial
  • Worldwide taxation once resident
  • School fees dominate the budget
